In 2017, the exam is scheduled to occur in the month of June. If you are still not ready to take the exam start preparing for it right now. Do you know how the scores in the IELTS exams come?

It is very simple, the results are reported on a 9-band scale. The scores range from 0-band to the 9-band. A person getting 0 means that he or she has not attempted any of the questions. The highest score being 9 means that the person is an expert in the language. The overall score is rounded off and given out.

Where Do You Require The Scores?

Most of the universities certainly require the scores. This is because the certificate or the score works as an evidence of the English proficiency of the person, if English is not their first language. This exam will make enrolling into an institution easy. The scores of this exam are valid for two years as many institutes agree to accept them within this timeframe. What Are The Areas You Need To Focus On?

If you really want to appear for the test start preparing for them by reading to a lot of English books, journals, magazines, etc.  The more you listen to English channels, podcasts, etc. the stronger your vocabulary grows. You can strengthen your skills by conversing in English. But for the exam one needs to focus on four areas that are described below:

Reading

You will have to answer 40 questions in the reading section. There will be gist assessment, reading of the main ideas, reading the detail, skimming, recognizing the writer's opinion, attitudes, and purposes. There are three long text pieces that are taken from various magazines, newspapers, journals, and magazines.

Writing

The writing part has two tasks. This includes that the topics should be of common interest and the type of response must be a formal one. In the initial task, there will be a graph or a table or chart or it may be a diagram that you will be asked to illustrate. In the second part of the task, you will have to write an essay in your own words.

Listening

The applicants of the exam are made to listen to four recordings of the English speakers. In the recordings there are two conversations and two monologues. The examiners here assess your ability to understand and introspect. You are to understand the details of the conversation, what they really wanted to mean, the focal point for the comment, etc.

Speaking

The speaking examination consists of three parts. Your power of speaking English is recorded and then tested. The first part of the examination consists of general questions concerning you and your family or your life, academics, interests, and hobbies, etc.

In the next part of the examination, you would be given a card where there is a particular topic and you have to speak on it. You will be given one minute for the preparation of the topic and two minutes for speaking. The examiner might also ask you some questions about the topic, which you need to answer. In the last part of the speaking test, you will be asked more questions about the topic for another five minutes at least.

The examination takes about 3 hours’ time. Reading, writing, and listening tests are completed within a day.

The speaking examination is typically conducted in the same week as other exams; it can be either before or after.  The reading and writing exams take an hour and the listening takes 30 minutes.
